Do not throw your hearing aid! (written by PipSqueak)

Do not throw your hearing aid! (written by PipSqueak)

IMG_8463I really like to throw things. Balls, hair bows, and my hearing aid. I started throwing my hearing aid if I was angry, tired, or if my sister took my toy. It was an effective way to get my Mama to respond fast!

At first, I was borrowing a BAHA hearing aid from the hospital. Mama decided to put an end to my throwing problem, quick before I got my new Ponto 3 hearing aid.

Time-out!

One morning, around 11am. I got angry. I grabbed the hearing aid and pulled it and the softband headband off my head. Then I threw it on the floor. Mama said, “No! No throwing your hearing aid. Time out.” My older sister knows all about “time-out” but I was only 18 months old, so I had never been in “time-out” before. I did not understand the concept of sitting still for no reason whatsoever. So Mama put me in my crib. I thought it must be bedtime, so I laid down and quickly fell asleep.

The next day, around 10:30 we repeated the same scenario. I got mad and threw the hearing aid and headband. Mama said, “no throwing” and put me in time-out in my crib. Then I took a nap again.

04 nap IMG_0997Mama realized I was throwing my hearing aid, because I was over-tired and cranky. So now I take a nap at 11am instead of waiting until noon. I learned, if I take the softband headband and BAHA hearing aid off, then it’s instantly bed-time. Now I get mad when Mama tries to take my hearing aid off. I don’t want to go night-night!

Ears On or Night-Night?

I do like being able to hear. So as soon as I wake up, I tap on my head and ask for my “ears.”

But every once in awhile, I don’t want my hearing aids.  Mama lets me feel like a powerful little person, by giving my choices. Instead of Mama saying, “wear your headband!” She says, “ears on or night-night?” I always pick “ears!”

Then she asks, “which one do you want to wear?” She offers me two headbands, which both match my outfit and lets me pick! I always choose the custom made softbands from The Baha Bowtique on Etsy because they are super comfortable and stay on my little head better than the manufacture’s softband.

I spend my time making Custom Softbands and Accessories for Ponto, AdHear and Baha hearing devices. I am also a published author. I wanted our daughter to see herself represented in a story - a little girl who has facial differences and wears BAHA hearing aids. The book grew to include some of our friends who are all so wonderfully different. My first book, “Wonderfully Different, Wonderfully Me” features a diverse group of children and celebrates each child’s unique strengths. All children can see themselves in at least one of the characters, whether they look similar, or have the same interests or personality. "Wonderfully Different, Wonderfully Me" is the children's book that belongs in every household and classroom, to promote inclusion, acceptance, and friendship.
